soldier_and_flag.jpgCivil War - The hardships of army life and comparing and contrasting a Union soldier, a Confederate soldier, and a modern day U.S. soldier.

1. Do Now: Learn about the life of a modern day soldier in the US army. You will go to the army website at the end of this paragraph. On the left hand side of the screen, click where it says, "Special Topics." Choose three different photos to look at and read about each one. Take notes about what you learn about the life of a modern soldier.

As you read, think about what you read yesterday about the life of confederate and union soldiers in the Civil War. Also, think about the similarities and differences between these soldiers. Here is the website: A day in the life of a modern soldier - click on "Special Topics" when you get there

Ms. Wax will be inviting students to come up and share some of the photos and ideas that they find with the rest of the class, so remember how to get to the photos you choose to learn about.

2. Our task for today is to create a cartoon depicting army life, comparing or contrasting what is was like to be a soldier during the Civil War and a soldier today.

  • You will create a cartoon with three panels: one for each type of soldier - Union, Confederate, and 21st century modern soldier.

  • Your goal is to capture one main idea about the life of your soldiers and how their lives compare or contrast, and represent it on the cartoon.

  • Each panel of your cartoon should include: background, a soldier, and a conversation bubble with text. You can add other items to your cartoon as well.

  • Reference pages 472 - 474 in Creating America (Blue Large Textbook) or your notebook notes from April 29, 2010.

  • You will be working with a partner of your choice to complete this assignment. Both partners should work cooperatively and have input for the assignment.
